Julian Maendel, MD

Julian D. Maendel, MD, is a valued member of the general surgery team at San Luis Valley Health. Dr. Maendel completed his residency, served as a research assistant, and was an intern at New Hanover Regional Medical Center/University of North Carolina. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Prior to medical school, he became familiar with Alamosa and the San Luis Valley while earning his bachelor’s degree from Adams State University, following two years of volunteer service with La Puente and its Outreach program.

In 2014, Dr. Maendel was awarded the Exceptional New Alumnus award, recognizing his early career achievements and dedication to his community.

Although Dr. Maendel comes from a family with siblings in the healthcare field, he did not always envision a career in medicine. What he did know was his desire to help others, particularly in underserved communities. During medical school, he discovered a passion for the challenges and hands-on nature of surgery, which led him to pursue it as a career. He also has an interest in international medicine and enjoyed overseas experiences during his residency.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Maendel has a love for history and enjoys playing the guitar. He and his wife, Amy, are grateful to call the San Luis Valley home. Together with their two children, they embrace the Colorado lifestyle by hiking, skiing, biking, playing tennis and hockey, running, and backpacking in the great outdoors.
