Julian Maendel, MD

Julian D. Maendel, MD, FACS, has been part of the outstanding general surgery team at San Luis Valley Health since 2017. He completed his surgical residency at New Hanover Regional Medical Center/University of North Carolina in Wilmington, NC. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Prior to medical school, he became familiar with the San Luis Valley while earning his bachelor’s degree from Adams State University, following two years of Americorps voluntary service also here in Alamosa.

In 2014, Dr. Maendel was awarded the Adams State University Exceptional New Alumnus award, recognizing his early career achievements and dedication to his community.

Dr. Maendel values the opportunity to work in a vocation that helps others, particularly in underserved communities. During medical school, he discovered a passion for the challenges and hands-on nature of surgery, which led him to pursue it as a career. He also has an interest in international medicine and has been part of numerous surgical mission trips to South America.

Dr. Maendel and his wife, Amy, are grateful to call the San Luis Valley home. Together with their four children, whose hockey and baseball teams Dr. Maendel coaches, they embrace the Colorado lifestyle by hiking, skiing, biking, playing tennis and hockey, running, and backpacking in the great outdoors.
