Inaugural Pancreatic Cancer Awareness 5K Raises Funds for the SLV Health Foundation

The Cantu family poses with a large check for the SLV Cancer Center.

On Saturday, July 26, the Cantu family held their very first Pancreatic Cancer Awareness 5K Fun Run & Walk in honor of Diana Cantu in Alamosa's Cole Park. It was put together by Erica Mortensen and the entire Cantu family, to honor the legacy of their mother, Diana Cantu, who bravely fought pancreatic cancer.

Continuing Diana’s Legacy

The Cantu family has been a dedicated supporter of the SLV Health Foundation and a passionate advocate for pancreatic cancer awareness. Over the years, they’ve hosted numerous fundraising events that have not only honored Diana’s legacy but also provided vital resources, supported local families, and raised awareness about the importance of early detection. Their dedication has made a lasting difference to countless individuals here in the San Luis Valley.

This inaugural race saw over 100 racers and raised over $8,000 dollars. Half of the donations were set aside to go to families within the community fighting Pancreatic cancer, and half were donated to the SLV Health Foundation, earmarked for SLV Health’s Cancer Center. These funds will continue the Cantu family’s mission of ensuring those undergoing cancer treatment at SLV Health have the highest level of comfort while they continue their fight against cancer.

Kelly Gurule, Director of the SLV Health Foundation, said of the generous donation, ““Diana Cantu’s family and friends came together to turn heartbreak into hope. Their generous donation honors Diana’s courageous fight and helps ensure that others facing cancer receive compassionate care close to home. We are so honored to receive this donation”

Raising Awareness for Pancreatic Cancer

Brandon Cantu, a member of the Cantu family and SLV Health’s Director of Therapy Services, spoke to one of the driving forces behind their efforts, saying “We just really want to promote the awareness, it’s one of those cancers that isn’t often detected until it’s in a later stage and harder to treat. We want people to be aware and be proactive.”

Continue the Race for a Cure

If you missed this event, don’t worry! Keep an eye out for next year’s 5K and to join the Cantu family in honoring their mother and supporting other members of our community who are battling cancer. In the meantime, you can take part in the upcoming Stephanie L. Miner 5K Walk and Run, happening Saturday, September 20, hosted by the SLV Health Foundation.
