820 Years of Commitment: SLV Health Honors Employees for Their Service

Some milestones are measured in numbers, but their true impact is measured in people. On October 28, San Luis Valley Health celebrated a remarkable achievement, recognizing 73 employees whose combined service totals an extraordinary 820 years dedicated to caring for the people of the San Luis Valley.

The annual Years of Service Celebration honored employees reaching milestones ranging from 10 to 40 years with the organization. Together, these individuals represent generations of healthcare professionals, support staff, leaders, and caregivers who have helped shape San Luis Valley Health into the organization it is today.

"Tonight, we get to celebrate you," said Mr. Tom Masterson during his welcome remarks. "We recognize you for your years of service, and we hope you accept your award with great pride and realize the true appreciation that the SLV Health organization has for your hard work over many years."

While 820 years is an impressive number, the significance lies in what those years represent. They reflect countless patients cared for, families comforted, colleagues mentored, challenges overcome, and lives touched. They represent early mornings, late nights, difficult decisions, and an unwavering commitment to serving the San Luis Valley.

The evening's program highlighted employees from nearly every area of the organization, including nursing, environmental services, maintenance, rehabilitation, information technology, finance, imaging, emergency services, and physician practices. Although their roles may differ, they share a common commitment to make San Luis Valley Health's mission of providing exceptional, patient-centered care to the community.

SLV Health Board President, Karla Hardesty, recognized the important role employees play in ensuring local access to quality healthcare, while remarks throughout the evening emphasized that the organization's greatest strength has always been its people.

Dr. Melissa Voutsalath, DO, reflected on the deeper meaning behind years of service and the relationships built throughout a healthcare career.

"Years of service represent so much more than time spent on the job," she said. "They represent dedication, compassion, resilience, and a commitment to caring for others during some of the most challenging and vulnerable moments in life."

She noted that the impact employees have extends far beyond their individual roles.

"Your contributions influence the people you work with, the teams you strengthen, and ultimately the patients and families who depend on us," she said. "Tonight, we celebrate your years of service, but more importantly, we celebrate you, the people behind the years, the dedication, and the difference you have made."

Among those recognized were employees celebrating 40 years of service, including Terri Salazar and Paul Jiron, whose careers have spanned decades of change in healthcare while remaining rooted in service to the community. Others marked milestones of 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, and 10 years, each contributing their own expertise, leadership, compassion, and dedication to the organization.

As comments from coworkers were shared, honorees were described as trusted mentors, patient advocates, dependable leaders, problem-solvers, innovators, and friends. Many were recognized not only for what they do, but for how they do it, bringing kindness, teamwork, and compassion to every interaction.

Collectively, the 820 years represented in the room have helped build stronger programs, expand services, improve patient care, and support generations of Valley residents. The milestone serves as a powerful reminder that healthcare is built on relationships and that the lasting impact of service is measured not simply by years, but by the lives touched along the way.

San Luis Valley Health extends its heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to all employees honored during the celebration. Their 820 combined years of service stand as a testament to the dedication, heart, and commitment that continue to make a difference for patients, families, and communities across the San Luis Valley every day.
