Viola Medina, FNP-BC
- Primary Specialty: Primary Care
Viola Medina, MSN, FNP-C, brings decades of nursing experience and a deep commitment to patient-centered care to San Luis Valley Health. Inspired by family members who served as registered nurses and nurse practitioners both in the United States and abroad, Viola's passion for healthcare began in high school when she worked as a nurse aide at her local hospital.
Viola earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, followed by a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of New Mexico. She later completed a post-master's certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Seattle Pacific University. Her professional interests include women's health and adolescent health, where she enjoys helping patients navigate important stages of life and achieve their best health outcomes.
Her approach to care centers on building trust through open communication, collaboration, and shared decision-making. Viola believes patients play an essential role in their healthcare journey and strives to create an environment where they feel heard, respected, and empowered. She finds the greatest reward in helping patients take a proactive role in their health and seeing improvements in their overall well-being.
After moving to Alamosa in 2025 to be closer to her son and extended family, Viola was drawn to San Luis Valley Health because of its strong reputation in the community and its welcoming, supportive staff. She is excited to serve the San Luis Valley by getting to know its residents, understanding their unique healthcare needs, and building lasting relationships with patients and families.
Throughout her career, Viola has been reminded of the meaningful impact healthcare providers can have on patients' lives. One particularly memorable experience came when she was featured in a Virginia Mason fundraising video, where a patient shared a heartfelt testimonial about the care she received. Experiences like these continue to reinforce her passion for healthcare and her dedication to serving others.
Viola hopes every patient leaves an appointment feeling empowered, supported, and confident that their healthcare needs are being met. She values hearing patients' life stories and developing therapeutic relationships that foster trust and continuity of care.
Outside of work, Viola enjoys long walks, yoga, dancing, reading, listening to a variety of music, spending time outdoors, and making memories with family and friends.
