SLV Health Welcomes Javier Martinez as Chief Financial Officer

San Luis Valley Health has named Javier Martinez as its new Chief Financial Officer, bringing with him more than 17 years of financial leadership experience and a lifelong commitment to the San Luis Valley into one of the organization’s key executive roles. Martinez succeeds Shane Mortensen, who is retiring after 22 years with SLV Health.

A native of Alamosa, Martinez is deeply rooted in the community he now serves. He graduated from Alamosa High School before earning a bachelor's degree in Accounting and Management Information Systems from Adams State University. His career began with the City of Alamosa, where he worked in finance for five years before joining Valley-Wide Health Systems. During his 12 years there, he helped guide the organization's financial strategy while supporting healthcare access across rural Colorado.

For Martinez, serving the San Luis Valley in a new capacity is both a professional opportunity and a personal one. “The San Luis Valley is the only community I’ve ever known and ever wanted to live in. My family has been here for generations,” said Martinez.

The Role of Finance in Local Healthcare

As CFO, Martinez sees finance as a critical partner in patient care. While financial teams may work behind the scenes, their decisions help ensure patients receive care in modern, welcoming facilities equipped with the technology and staff needed to deliver high-quality healthcare. "Every department has a role to play in providing care," he said, "Finance helps
make sure we have the resources to maintain our facilities, invest in equipment, and attract and retain great employees. That all contributes to the experience our patients have."
Looking ahead, Martinez hopes to bring fresh perspectives to the organization while helping SLV Health navigate an evolving healthcare landscape. "Growing up here, I understand the challenges we face, not just in healthcare, but as a rural community," Martinez said. "I experience those same barriers alongside everyone else. That perspective helps me understand how important it is to make thoughtful decisions that support our patients, employees, and community."

Outside of work, Martinez enjoys spending time in the outdoors with his wife, golfing with his son, exploring the mountains, riding side-by-sides and four-wheelers and cooking for his family. When asked what he loves most about the San Luis Valley, it was an easy answer. "It's the community " he said, "It’s the people. If I can use my skills to make a positive impact on the community, that's exactly what I want to do."

The Next Chapter at SLV Health

SLV Health is the San Luis Valley’s largest employer, with over 750 employees. As he begins his new role, Martinez wants employees to know they have a partner in him, saying "My door is always open. We all play an important role in making SLV Health successful, and I look forward to working together to continue serving our community."
As Shane Mortensen prepares for retirement, the organization’s leadership team is grateful for his years of dedicated service and steady leadership. His transition marks the beginning of a new chapter for SLV Health’s financial leadership as Martinez steps into the CFO role.

“We are thrilled to welcome Javier to SLV Health,” said Konnie Martin, CEO of SLV Health. “Javier brings the financial expertise, local insight and steady leadership that will help our organization continue moving forward. His deep roots in the San Luis Valley and his understanding of rural healthcare make him an excellent fit for SLV Health and the community we serve.”

In his new role, Martinez will help oversee SLV Health’s financial strategy, planning, and stewardship as the organization continues to provide essential healthcare services across southern Colorado. His appointment reflects SLV Health’s ongoing commitment to strong leadership, operational excellence, and locally grounded decision-making.
