RQI Program to be Utilized by Employees at SLV Health

The ground-breaking Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) program from the American Heart Association utilizes simulation, to ensure continued competency in the areas of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care of adult and pediatric patients.  Our Education Team identified the need for this program to provide a higher level of quality in emergency patient care.  Several studies have demonstrated that CPR skills can degrade as quickly as 6 months after initial training.  By providing the frequent practice necessary, lifesaving skills are retained. 

The RQI program includes cognitive and psychomotor skill assessments that are performed at a mobile simulation station.  Educational videos, eSimulation patient cases and multiple-choice exam questions are completed to assess the cognitive skills of emergency care.  The mobile station houses an adult and infant manikin and a tablet computer, to connect the student to training material.  Through quarterly skills drills that take less than a 10 minute average to complete, healthcare providers achieve and maintain high-quality CPR performance.  

The RQI program will be utilized by approximately 400 employees at SLV Health.  Three simulation stations will be placed in strategic locations throughout the facility to ensure ease of access, 24 hours a day.  Learning at these stations will replace the traditional, every two year, “live” classroom recertification courses.  The installment of the equipment is scheduled in March of 2016, with an implementation date of April 1, 2016.
